How to overcome writer's block In order to avoid being afflicted with writer's block, there are a few things you should do. Firstly, don't try to work too hard or too fast. Secondly, find what your particular creative process is and work with it — don't fight it. If you can't take any ideas from your subconscious and must begin writing without any guidance whatsoever, do so — the words might surprise you! But if this makes your brain freeze up like a machine gun-tripped bear trap (which we doubt), then by all means take some time away from writing or use that time for something else creative until an idea comes along. Keep your writing relationship with your reader clear. Write to tell them something, not just to tell them how clever you are. Stick to basics and get straight to the point. If you do what's right, the emphasis is on the right. Then there's creativity. Don't let anyone else's idea of what creativity means rule you or hinder you. It isn't necessary to make any of us chuckle…but it does help if we can guffaw a little! Nothing wrong with having one or two chuckles at yourself or what you've written, but don't let that become your sole purpose in writing something. There's little to be gained by trying to make everyone laugh, but there's even less of a reason for not trying to make some readers, at least, smile. I've got a friend who says that the easiest way to write well is to write what you love. Perhaps she thinks writing isn't for everyone…but if you're lucky enough to be able to do it, then keep doing it. If you're one of those few people who can put into words what they feel about someone or something, then don't ever let go. You'll grow where most writers grow old and grumpy. Today, more people can write well than ever before. That's hard to believe, isn't it? In the past, writing was a path filled with broken glass and spiked pits. It really didn't matter if you were a male or a female, a slave or a free person. Writing was only for the very rich and the very educated. However, today we have many tools which can help us to be better writers — spell checkers, dictionaries and thesauruses to name a few. If you're not one of those rare people who can put what they feel into words, then that doesn't mean that you should just give up on your dreams. You can still write. You can still express what you feel. You can still be creative, you can still write for yourself and for others too. You really don't need to write like Shakespeare or Dickens. But if you're not writing like Shakespeare or Dickens but saying your heart's true, then that's good enough for many people!
